Have you heard of TURO? https://turo.com/
Its the worlds largest car sharing marketplace. Similar to traditional rental agencies such as Enterprise, Budget, Avis and Hertz, you enter in dates, times, and where you want to rent. Hosts then share their availability. You book a car and then its a transaction thru the TURO app but with a private party.
I’ll show an example. We’re using TURO for our Palm Springs trip in October.

you can see I selected Palm Springs airport with our dates/arrival times and then a list of cars appeared.
We booked a newer Camry: total for trip is 374.57 which is prepaid.
I received confirmation from Joe, the owner. I then made some changes later with no problems directly with Joe. Cars of often delivered to baggage claim or in paid lots at the airport. You get keys from a lockbox on the car and check in thru the App and show photos of the condition of the car at check out.

Now let’s compare Costco travel to this rental (I have had great experience with Costco rental cars)

You can see we are saving $161 on this rental by using TURO. A few differences to note, you are required to buy a minimum insurance plan on TURO, (this is included in my above pricing) even if your personal insurance covers rental cars. In my opinion its still cheaper.
I think TURO would also be a great option if you want a rental car for just a few days of a trip, many folks who rent cars will deliver for free to a hotel or nearby location. This saves no airport fees that are often imposed.
Be careful and do research when renting cars. In Oahu the city doesn’t allow TURO car rentals at the Honolulu airport. The customer is required to Uber or taxi to get the car off site. I then did some diligent shopping and was able to get a great deal at Costco travel for our trip in Sept. I have used TURO in San Diego, in Palm Springs and in Maui. I have found the cars to be in excellent condition and the owners super flexible. Our Maui flight arrived 90 mins early and our car was ready for no extra charge. So your research and try it out!
